After going viral for its nude lipsticks made for women of color, by women of color, Mented Cosmetics is about to add another essential lip product to its roster. In September, Mented — which is short for “pigmented” — is launching a line of lip glosses. What makes these stand out from other gloss formulas and hues? Every single shade in the four-shade collection was specifically created with women of color in mind.
Like the shade ranges for foundation and lipsticks, the founders of Mented have experienced a gap in the beauty market when it comes to lip glosses that cater to women of color. KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson know the struggle of finding the perfect nude gloss for their skin tone well. Johnson, in particular, is a self-professed “hardcore lip gloss fan.” However, trying to find one that isn’t too frosty, too sheer, or doesn’t clash with her complexion proved to be difficult in the past. That’s where the new collection comes in.
Baby Brown (a milk chocolate), Berry Me (a deep raspberry), Mauve Over (a dusty mauve), and Send Nudes (a caramel) fit Johnson’s happy shade medium. You can peep all of them on the models above in the respective order. Like its lipsticks, the new Mented lip glosses have just the right amount of pigment so they don’t look overbearingly bright or don’t disappear completely on deeper skin tones.
As for the actual formula, the upcoming collection has an adorable name: Gloss for Grown Ups. Unlike the lip glosses of our youth, Mented made sure to formulate ones that won’t leave your lips in a sticky situation. Plus, they aren’t too shiny either. Each lip gloss has a subtle shine that you can easily wear to the office, on a date, or out with friends without looking like you’re dressed up as Dionne from Clueless. Although her look is iconic, some of the beauty choices from that movie deserve to stay in the ’90s.
The Mented Cosmetics Gloss for Grown Ups collection will be available on September 1 for $15 each on mentedcosmetics.com.
