Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Named an Invention of the Year

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty has lit up all our lives, and it’s about time it was recognized by the establishment!

Time magazine announced their 25 Best Inventions of the Year and, of course, Fenty Beauty is on the list. It’s a pretty impressive list, and it’s no surprised to see the makeup empire next to such innovations as the iPhone X and mugs that self-heat your coffee (!!!).

Queen Rih Rih spole to Time about being included on the list.

“It was important that every woman felt included in this brand,” she said. “We are all so different, with our own unique skin tones, so we started with the 40 foundation shades out the gate.”

“I never could have anticipated the emotional connection that women are having with the products and the brand as a whole,” she continued. “Some are finding their shade of foundation for the first time, getting emotional at the counter. That’s something I will never get over.”

Rihanna on Building a Beauty Empire: ‘I’m Going To Push the Boundaries in This Industry’

Rihanna’s make-up line, Fenty Beauty, has garnered rave reviews since its launch in September, both for its quality-to-affordability ratio and its emphasis on inclusivity. (It launched with 40 shades of foundation and an ad campaign featuring a diverse array of models.) Now that Fenty Beauty been named one of TIME‘s 25 Best Inventions of 2017, we caught up with its superstar creator to talk about how and why she’s building a beauty empire, and what’s in store for the future.

TIME: What’s your earliest memory of beauty?

Rihanna: My lifelong obsession with makeup started with watching my mom put her makeup on. I always loved to watch her, and all the funny faces she was making in the mirror. I never understood it until I got older and fell in love with makeup myself and really started becoming obsessed. The first time I remember having my makeup done was for this beauty pageant that I did in school. I was 15, about to be 16, just before I got signed. I had my full face done for this pageant — my mom actually did my makeup. And ever since then, ever since I saw foundation on my skin, I could never look at my skin without foundation again. Makeup, it spoiled me.

Why do you wear makeup now? What role does it play in your daily routine?

Makeup is like a secret weapon. Depending on my mood, my look, or the occasion, makeup can go from very subtle to a complete transformation, and that’s the fun in makeup: being able to play and create in endless ways.

You’ve said that you created this line so that all users could have a product that looked good on them, no matter the shade. Did you have difficulty in the past finding products that worked for you? And if so, how did you use that experience while creating your own line?

I’ve had my makeup done thousands of time, and when it comes to foundation, you just never know how it’s going to turn out. I think foundation should look like great skin, so it was important to me that the Pro Filt’r foundation had a soft matte finish because you want a dewy look, but never shiny! It was also important that every woman felt included in this brand. We are all so different, with our own unique skin tones, so we started with the 40 foundation shades out the gate.

What were the most important factors that you considered while creating Fenty Beauty?

Texture is the most important part of the Fenty Beauty brand. The highest priority is in the texture, from the foundation to Match Stix, to Killawatt, to Invisimatte Blotting Powder – it’s all about texture. It was really important to me that each product is made to easily build and layer with lightweight textures that are flexible even when you want to re-apply.

How involved were you in the process of creating the products?

I have 100 percent involvement in this process, which is what makes this so special and very fun. I have so much creative freedom from products to packaging, and that’s really the only way this brand will stay true to my vision for it.

What has surprised you the most about the response to Fenty Beauty?

I never could have anticipated the emotional connection that women are having with the products and the brand as a whole. Some are finding their shade of foundation for the first time, getting emotional at the counter. That’s something I will never get over.

Do you have a favorite product from Fenty Beauty?

I’m obsessed with Gloss Bomb. It never gets old. Everything about it from the XXL wand, the texture, scent and feel. But funny enough, some of my favorite products aren’t even out yet.

What’s next for you and the world of beauty?

The options are pretty much unlimited in the world of beauty, and I love challenges, so I’m going to continue to have fun and push the boundaries in this industry.

Rihanna responded to a popular makeup brand that seemed to throw shade at Fenty Beauty

The gloves are off and the fight is on between Rihanna and popular cosmetics brand, Make Up For Ever.

On September 26, the company posted a very suspicious Instagram photo — which we first saw on Teen Vogue— that several users believe was targeted towards Fenty Beauty. In the post’s caption, Make Up For Ever alluded to Rihanna’s wide foundation range writing, “40 shades is nothing new to us.”

Fenty Beauty officially debuted on September 8 with that exact number of foundation shades, which made news being that it’s one of the largest offerings by a luxury brand to date.

Make Up For Ever, which was founded in 1984, also boasted its status as a longtime makeup authority in the caption. “Since 2015, the #ultraHDfoundationreleased 40 shades for everyone’s unique skin tone understanding the difference between red and yellow undertones,” the brand wrote on Instagram. “With expertise, time and passion – we shall continue to develop and improve our products for pros, for you, for everyone.”

In response, thousands of Rihanna’s fans came to her defense. One Instagrammer wrote, “sit the f— down makeup [sic] forever [sic]. A majority of the time people still have to mix your foundations to get the right shade, so two of your foundations alone would be like 80 dollars??”

A separate user aimed to poke holes in Make Up For Ever’s argument: “How shaken must you be to come out like a salty aunty trying to throw shade at the Amazing Rihanna??? Why are you not celebrating the fact that another brand caters to all women? Go check yourself, you’re PATHETIC,” they wrote.

Upon learning of the brand’s claims, The Shade Room reported that Rihanna herself commented under the post. Clearly amused, she only had a few words to say: “lol. still ashy” and “shook.”

Although Make Up For Ever is a leader in diversity among other industry frontrunners, many of the brand’s deepest foundation shades weren’t available until 30 years after its original set was released.

That’s not the case with Fenty Beauty. Rather than considering the option to expand her line in the future, Rihanna explained during the line’s launch event on September 7 that her goal was to create makeup “that girls of all skin tones could fall in love with.”

“In every product I was like, ‘There needs to be something for a dark-skinned girl, there needs to be something for a really pale girl, there needs to be something in-between,'” Rihanna told Refinery29. Since launching, on September 21 she announced that her cosmetics line would be releasing even more makeup soon.

It’s amazing to see that inclusivity is now a chief priority within cosmetics. Hopefully, this feud doesn’t take away from the progress the beauty industry has made as a whole.

A representative for Make Up For Ever did not immediately respond to INSIDER’s request for comment.

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Foundation Comes In 40 Shades So You Can Definitely Find Your Color

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line is coming, and it’s causing some serious (and well-deserved) Internet buzz. Not only was the first campaign for the brand incredibly diverse, but Rihanna has now explicitly stated that the Fenty Beauty foundation rangewill feature 40 different shades.

Basically, Rihanna is coming for every beauty brand with small, inadequate shade ranges — and fans are living for it.

In the lead up to the Sept. 8 launch, the talented artist teased everything from highlighters to lip glosses to foundations. It quickly became clear that Fenty Beauty’s mission is to honor and celebrate women of color. It’s a noble and needed cause in a beauty industry notorious for ignoring racial diversity and the needs of black women.

Now, thank to Instagram, fans now know that everyone will be able to rock Fenty Beauty. The brand’s foundation — called Pro Filt’r — will feature a huge40 shades. According to The Cut, Rihanna responded to a fan account that inquired about the 40 shade range rumor. Known for responding to fans’ DMs, Rihanna confirmed the rumor was true, so get ready to shop.

Not only did Rihanna confirm the number of foundations in the line, but she also reaffirmed her commitment to celebrating racial diversity. The Fenty Beauty creator has clearly seen the need for more representation of women of color in the beauty world, and she’s here to meet it.

The internet was quickly abuzz with the news, and fans were stoked.

Some immediately began to lament that other brands can’t seem to do the same.

Of course, fans are going to get their fans on the foundation no matter what.

Come Sept. 8, Fenty Beauty’s foundations will officially be up for grabs. If you want to get your hands on one of the 40 shades, grab your caffeine source of choice because the launch is set for 12 a.m PT/3 a.m. ET.
