Rihanna responded to a popular makeup brand that seemed to throw shade at Fenty Beauty

The gloves are off and the fight is on between Rihanna and popular cosmetics brand, Make Up For Ever.

On September 26, the company posted a very suspicious Instagram photo — which we first saw on Teen Vogue— that several users believe was targeted towards Fenty Beauty. In the post’s caption, Make Up For Ever alluded to Rihanna’s wide foundation range writing, “40 shades is nothing new to us.”

Fenty Beauty officially debuted on September 8 with that exact number of foundation shades, which made news being that it’s one of the largest offerings by a luxury brand to date.

Make Up For Ever, which was founded in 1984, also boasted its status as a longtime makeup authority in the caption. “Since 2015, the #ultraHDfoundationreleased 40 shades for everyone’s unique skin tone understanding the difference between red and yellow undertones,” the brand wrote on Instagram. “With expertise, time and passion – we shall continue to develop and improve our products for pros, for you, for everyone.”

In response, thousands of Rihanna’s fans came to her defense. One Instagrammer wrote, “sit the f— down makeup [sic] forever [sic]. A majority of the time people still have to mix your foundations to get the right shade, so two of your foundations alone would be like 80 dollars??”

A separate user aimed to poke holes in Make Up For Ever’s argument: “How shaken must you be to come out like a salty aunty trying to throw shade at the Amazing Rihanna??? Why are you not celebrating the fact that another brand caters to all women? Go check yourself, you’re PATHETIC,” they wrote.

Upon learning of the brand’s claims, The Shade Room reported that Rihanna herself commented under the post. Clearly amused, she only had a few words to say: “lol. still ashy” and “shook.”

Although Make Up For Ever is a leader in diversity among other industry frontrunners, many of the brand’s deepest foundation shades weren’t available until 30 years after its original set was released.

That’s not the case with Fenty Beauty. Rather than considering the option to expand her line in the future, Rihanna explained during the line’s launch event on September 7 that her goal was to create makeup “that girls of all skin tones could fall in love with.”

“In every product I was like, ‘There needs to be something for a dark-skinned girl, there needs to be something for a really pale girl, there needs to be something in-between,'” Rihanna told Refinery29. Since launching, on September 21 she announced that her cosmetics line would be releasing even more makeup soon.

It’s amazing to see that inclusivity is now a chief priority within cosmetics. Hopefully, this feud doesn’t take away from the progress the beauty industry has made as a whole.

A representative for Make Up For Ever did not immediately respond to INSIDER’s request for comment.

Rihanna’s new makeup line has industry scrambling

It’s hard to explain how hard it is to find a foundation for your skin tone when you have medium or  dark complexions.

I’ve strolled countless makeup lines at grocery stores and drug stores trying to find my match among the “beige” and “tawny” offerings. My talent for mixing foundation colors is about as good as my juggling skills, which are non-existent. And though I’ve written about beauty for years, I rarely get makeup samples for my complexion.

So I was elated to learn that Rihanna’s new Fenty Beauty makeup line at Sephora has 40 foundation shades, from very pale white to very dark brown. Many of the deeper tones have sold out.

With most beauty brands releasing two shades for women of color, Rihanna has shed more light on the industry’s need to address diversity.  Even employees at Sephora have posted photos of empty racks of Fenty Beauty, especially foundations darker skin tones.

Celebrities, including Empire’s Gabourey Sidibe and model Nneoma Anosike, are touting the line on social media. Locally, author Reshonda Tate Billingsley commented on Facebook:

“I’m not a bandwagon person and I usually don’t jump on celebrity stuff….but this Rihanna Fenty Beauty is the truth! #ByeMac”

Fenty Beauty arrived online and in Sephora stores on Sept. 8.

Rihanna Stans Are Trolling Kylie Jenner Over Her Makeup Line And It’s Fucking Savage

The new makeup line is not only cruelty-free, but is hella inclusive with 40 different shades of foundation available.

But on the same day that Fenty Beauty launched, Kylie Cosmetics began advertising a slew of new products, including a new shade of Kylighter.

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Foundation Comes In 40 Shades So You Can Definitely Find Your Color

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line is coming, and it’s causing some serious (and well-deserved) Internet buzz. Not only was the first campaign for the brand incredibly diverse, but Rihanna has now explicitly stated that the Fenty Beauty foundation rangewill feature 40 different shades.

Basically, Rihanna is coming for every beauty brand with small, inadequate shade ranges — and fans are living for it.

In the lead up to the Sept. 8 launch, the talented artist teased everything from highlighters to lip glosses to foundations. It quickly became clear that Fenty Beauty’s mission is to honor and celebrate women of color. It’s a noble and needed cause in a beauty industry notorious for ignoring racial diversity and the needs of black women.

Now, thank to Instagram, fans now know that everyone will be able to rock Fenty Beauty. The brand’s foundation — called Pro Filt’r — will feature a huge40 shades. According to The Cut, Rihanna responded to a fan account that inquired about the 40 shade range rumor. Known for responding to fans’ DMs, Rihanna confirmed the rumor was true, so get ready to shop.

Not only did Rihanna confirm the number of foundations in the line, but she also reaffirmed her commitment to celebrating racial diversity. The Fenty Beauty creator has clearly seen the need for more representation of women of color in the beauty world, and she’s here to meet it.

The internet was quickly abuzz with the news, and fans were stoked.

Some immediately began to lament that other brands can’t seem to do the same.

Of course, fans are going to get their fans on the foundation no matter what.

Come Sept. 8, Fenty Beauty’s foundations will officially be up for grabs. If you want to get your hands on one of the 40 shades, grab your caffeine source of choice because the launch is set for 12 a.m PT/3 a.m. ET.

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty makeup line to launch Sept. 8

Today we have been blessed with the news that Rihanna’s Fenty Beautymakeup line, which has been whispered about for a while now, finally has a release date: Sept. 8.

Riri made the grand announcement on Instagram on Tuesday, noting that, unlike celebrity makeup collections from Kylie Jenner or Kim KardashianWest, hers will be readily available at Sephora stores worldwide, and at Harvey Nichols too.

Almost immediately, fans flipped out. “IM READY TO GIVE U ALL MY COINS SIS” one commenter wrote. Another: “Miss fenty is not f*cking around.”

What we know as far as makeup collection specifics is, well, quite literally nothing. We haven’t seen any packaging and we don’t have any idea what makeup products will be included in this line.

That hasn’t stopped people from guessing though. On Instagram in July, Rihanna’s makeup artist, Mylah Morales, tagged @FentyBeauty in a picture of Rihanna at the Hollywood Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planetspremiere, where her makeup look was glow-y and pink-y.

So that’s at least something. Of course, we’ll keep you updated if Rihanna decides to divulge anything more before Fenty Beauty’s launch date, but we may end up waiting until Sept. 8 to see for ourselves.

Rihanna’s Millennial Pink Makeup Will Be Your New Summer Style Inspiration

Rihanna matched her makeup to her two-piece Prada outfit at the Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets premiere in Paris on Tuesday, July 25. The result? A Millennial pink dream!

Seems the Barbados native, 29, is one of the many fans of the sweet hue popular with the 20s and 30s set. What we love is that by choosing makeup shades, which she tagged to her Fenty Beauty line on Instagram, in the same color family but taking them warmer and richer, she brought a whole new way to go for the “It” color.

It’s not the only time Rihanna has worn pink while promoting the flick. The singer also went for a cotton-candy frock for the Los Angeles premiere on July 17.

And it’s also not the first surprise that’s come from this movie’s red carpets. Co-star Cara Delevingne shocked us with clip-in bangs earlier this week at the London premiere. This movie is the gift that keeps on giving in the makeup and fashion inspiration departments!

As for her role in the film, Rihanna plays Bubble, a shape-shifting alien. Valerian producer Virginie Besson-Silla told Vanity Fair about the part earlier this month, saying “[Director Luc Besson] had this idea that this one character can change into every man’s fantasy — the cabaret performer, the Marilyn Monroe-type performer, the African tribeswoman — but in a way that also appealed to women. She is sexy and cute, but the sexiness is never negative.”
